Story

We asked calligrapher and designer Erica Tighe Campbell to illustrate the Society of Jesus’ four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP), which are guiding the Society’s mission from 2019-2029:

Here Tighe Campbell reflects on how she approached the project.

When we began talking about the UAP it was clear that the four principles do not exist on their own and instead are interwoven together. Rather than quadrants, I wanted them to be depicted together. The path represents all of our individual and communal spiritual and life journeys. The Jesuits exist all over the world and span all ages so I sought to represent the diversity of Jesuit life. The activities taking place stem from the church that has open doors to represent the idea that all are welcome — young and old, rich and poor. There is an empty seat at the dinner table to demonstrate that there is space for more people to pull up their seat. And since the Holy Spirit is the one ever guiding the work of the Jesuits, there are doves flying overhead.

The thing that strikes me the most about the UAP is that they each focus on being with people. Rather than imposing, there is a desire to meet people where they are, as they are — while offering a path with Ignatian spirituality that has guided people for ages.

Erica Tighe CampbellErica Tighe Campbell is the founder and designer of a Modern Catholic Lifestyle brand, Be A Heart. She found calligraphy years ago while living in New York to work through anxiety and depression. Once she moved to Los Angeles, it became a career and God keeps surprising her with the direction he is moving it. She now lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband and one-year-old daughter, Frances. She served as a volunteer in Brazil with a Catholic organization and has a heart for the poor. She is proud of this work because it was done entirely during nap times while postpartum in the midst of a pandemic.
