Remembering Jesuit Father Paul S. Naumann

Fr. Paul S. Naumann, S.J. passed away on June 17, 2022, following a brief illness. A native of Syracuse, Fr. Naumann was born in 1929. After graduating from Baldwinsville Academy, he attended Le Moyne College for two years prior to his entrance into Society of Jesus on August 15, 1953. His Jesuit course of studies in preparation for ordination to the priesthood were at St. Andrew on Hudson Jesuit Novitiate and Juniorate, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Weston College, Weston, Mass. Fr. Naumann was ordained a priest on June 15, 1963. From 1965 to 1994 he was on the faculty of Canisius High School, Buffalo, where he taught English and served as moderator and director of student theatrical productions.

He was a passionate teacher of English language studies and was a respected and beloved teacher and pastoral minister to generations of Canisius graduates. Fr. Naumann came to Le Moyne College and served as faculty member in the English Department from 1994 to 2001, before beginning 20 years of writing and the publication of 12 books of fiction, which are still in print. While a member of the Community at Loyola Jesuit Residence, he also served as house librarian. During his years of ministry in Syracuse, Fr. Naumann also served as weekend associate priest in local parishes in the Diocese of Syracuse, including St. Daniel’s, St. James (now Our Lady of Hope), and Immaculate Conception, Fayetteville.

Fr. Naumann was predeceased by his parents, Marshall and Helen Schiller Naumann, and his brothers Marshall Naumann, Jr. and Ronald Naumann, M.D. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and their families, as well as his brother Jesuits at Loyola Jesuit Residence at Le Moyne.
