In Memoriam

Jesuit Father John (Jack) Stephen Doyle died on May 25, 2015, at René Goupil House in Pickering, Ontario. He was 84 and in his 60th year of religious life.

Fr. Doyle was born at Brewers Mills, Ontario. After six years at Regiopolis High School in Kingston, Ontario, he entered the Jesuits at Guelph on September 7, 1955. He did the usual two years of juniorate and then went to Mount St. Michael’s in Spokane, Washington, for philosophy. In 1962, he began regency at Regiopolis High School. Theology then followed at Regis College.

After his ordination on June 3, 1967, Fr. Doyle applied for the missions in Zambia. In the summer of 1968, Fr. Doyle flew off to Zambia, spending the next 40 years there. He was a pastor of several parishes, socius to the provincial, minister of various communities and chaplain at University Teaching Hospital in Zambia. He returned to Canada in 1972 for tertianship at Regis College in Toronto. Fr. Doyle said farewell to Zambia in 2008 and moved to Winnipeg to serve as associate pastor at St. Ignatius Parish.

In 2012, he was diagnosed with cancer. In 2013, he moved to the Jesuit infirmary at Pickering for recuperation and treatment.
