Bradley, Robert I. (Father)

Jesuit Father Robert I. Bradley died Dec. 20, 2013, at the Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, Calif. He was 89.

Born in Spokane, Wash., he was one of eight children, including three brothers who became priests. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1941 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1955. He received a doctorate in philosophy from Columbia University and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.

An author and educator, he was a professor of theology at St. John’s University from the late 1960s until 1981. He then taught at Notre Dame Institute, Arlington, Va. He co-authored a translation of “The Catechism of the Council of Trent” and wrote “The Roman Catechism in the Catechetical Tradition of the Church.” He taught history at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., in the 1950s and at Seattle University, where he became dean in the 1960s. Beginning in 1996, he taught theology at the University of Dallas Institute for Religious and Pastoral Studies and then at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, Denton, Neb. He also served in parishes in the Diocese of Austin, Texas.
